Colombo Shopping Center, Lisbon, Portugal
Centro Colombo is located in the parish of Carnide. It is built next to Avenida Lusíada and Segunda Circular. The bus terminal next to the building and the metro station of Colégio Militar allow visitors easy access to the place. It was inaugurated on September 15 of 1997.
The name of the center is a tribute to Christopher Columbus, an Italian navigator and explorer, responsible for leading the fleet that reached the American continent on October 12, 1492. The architecture of the space, as well as its original decoration, were adapted to the time of the Portuguese discoveries, one of the most important periods in the history of Portugal. The squares and streets inside the center have names alluding to the sixteenth-century period, such as the Avenida dos Descobrimentos and the Tropico de Câncer square. Between 2007 and 2009, the interior decoration of the center was completely renovated, mixing contemporary themes with the original ones.
It has enough trade having greengrocers, clothing stores, food stores, stationery, a chapel, a hypermarket, etc. It also has cinemas, amusement parks, sporadic exhibitions and gardens with several restaurants. It is now the largest shopping center of the Iberian Peninsula in total number of shops.
The Shopping Center Colombo has 114 131 m2 of gross leasable area with about 340 stores and 6,326 parking places.
The Torres do Colombo, which were foreseen in the initial project as an integral part of the Colombo Center, only began to be built in 2007 due to an embargo process by the Lisbon City Council, resolved in the meantime by the courts. The East Tower was completed in March 2009 and the West Tower in February 2011.
