Carnaxide, Portugal


Carnaxide is the oldest documented land in Portugal. It was an old parish of the county of Oeiras, with 6.63 km ². The village was elevated on August 16, 1991. It has by the name of St. George.

It was aggregated by the administrative reorganization of 2012/2013, being its territory integrated in the Union parishes of Carnaxide and Queijas.

Carnaxide is the third oldest parish of the country, being mentioned in official documentation for the first time in century XIV, its origin dates back to century XIII.

On February 13, 1597, D. Antão de Almada received from the King D. Philip I a Letter of Mercy from this parish, referring to it as his regiment.

This parish was for many years the largest in Portugal, a place that currently belongs to Algueirão - Mem Martins, until it was divided in 1993 and separated from the parishes of Linda-a-Velha, Algés, Queijas and Cruz Quebrada - Dafundo. 

Its main economic activity has been in the presence of a large number of large companies, such as EFACEC, Sumol or Mota-Engil, and in small businesses. 

Carnaxide has a Civic Center, Ruy de Carvalho Auditorium, the Parish Council, the Municipal Library of Carnaxide and day center.

There are also several gardens, among which the Fernando Pessoa Garden stands out.
